Catalina Swinburn’s exhibition Devotional Landscapes meditates on the spiritual topography of Zawiyas, common centres or shrines of holiness in the Maghreb, and sanctuaries of spiritual and mystical explorations of Sufism. Swinburn’s new body of work straddles both archaeological and contemporary languages; it marks a visual recognition of a geography where architectural notes and landmarks are intertwined in her work.

The sound piece, specially designed for the premier work to be displayed in Encounters ArtBasel Hong Kong with Selma Feriani, acts as an immersive experience inspired in a poem by Guaman Poma de Ayala (Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala (b. c. 1535; d. c. 1615), one of the most polemic and most admired native authors of the colonial period considered a primary source of information on the pre-Columbian Andean world and on the first decades of Spanish colonization. Recorded with the performative action of weaving in the artist studio as part of the ritual to complete this 5 totems journey of this memories of shared cartographies.
En consecuencia, la obra de arte se activa por el rol de la artista como fabricante y ejecutora de la escultura. Esto podría interpretarse como una metáfora de la resistencia según la cual las narrativas entretejidas aparecen como un sustituto del silencio de las mujeres a lo largo de la historia.
